Total volume of mobile data usage in Belgium 2012-2022, by type of subscription

In total, approximately 757,393 terabytes of mobile data were used in Belgium in 2022. This is a significant increase compared to 2012, when roughly 4,000 terabytes of data were used by Belgians. Around 695,139 terabytes of data that were used came directly from the mobile network operators (MNO), while the 62,253 used terabytes of mobile data were from MVNOs (mobile virtual network operators). Observing the average usage of mobile data per active SIM card, it increased annually between the period of 2013 to 2021 in Belgium. In 2013, an average of 130 megabytes per SIM car was used, whereas by 2022 it amounted to nearly 6.1 gigabytes.

Revenue of the telecommunications and mobile market

The revenue of the telecommunication market totaled approximately 8.4 billion euros in 2022, of which roughly 3.4 billion euros originated from the mobile market and 3.7 billion euros from the fixed market. The television market accounted for over 1.2 billion euros and experienced a slight increase when compared to 2021. Looking at the revenue of the mobile phone market, most of its revenue amounted to just over two billion euros in 2022.

Smartphone ownership highest among Belgian youth

In 2018, 96 percent of the respondents aged between 18 and 24 years indicated to own a smartphone in Belgium, whereas 94 percent of the 25 to 34-year-olds said to own a smartphone. Furthermore, the lowest ownership rate was with those aged 65 to 75 years old with nearly 70 percent.
