In 2023, Hong Kong imported over 3.8 billion liters of gas oil, diesel oil, and naphtha. By comparison, just under 540 million liters of unleaded gasoline was imported that same year.

Honk Kong’s imports of energy commodities

Due to a lack of local resources, Hong Kong heavily relies on imports to meet its energy needs. Oil products account for the largest share of imported energy commodities, which together made up over 77 percent of all energy commodities imported to Hong Kong in 2021. Although electricity only accounted for a small share of the imported energy mix, there has been an increased volume of imported electricity in recent years.

Import sources

Sources for Hong Kong’s fuel oil imports in 2022 were located exclusively in Asia, with Singapore providing nearly 2.3 gigaliters. That same year, Indonesia accounted for the majority of Hong Kong coal imports. Furthermore, more than 99 percent of Hong Kong’s imports of liquefied petroleum gas were sourced from mainland China in 2022.
