Fruit production in Belgium 2021/2022

Organic fruit production
Although organic farming is on the rise, the share of organic fruit produced in Belgium is still relatively low. For example, in 2017 the total production of organic pears amounted to roughly 855 tons. The organic apple production was even lower, at nearly 820 tons. This was a steep decrease in comparison to the previous year though, mainly as a result of late frost. As a share of the total production, the organic apple production was higher than the organic pear production too.
Organic fruit farmland
The share of land dedicated to organic fruit production was equally low in this period. In 2016, there were just under 100 hectares of organic pear farmland in Belgium. This was a significant increase in comparison to the previous years though. In 2012, there had only been 60 hectares of organic farmland. A similar trend was however not visible in the organic apple farmland, which decreased by over 80 hectares in the same period.
In 2021/2022, the production of pears in Belgium is forecast to amount to roughly 354,000 tons. By comparison, in the same year the production volume of apples is expected to reach roughly 240,000 tons. This is to some extent a reflection of the Organic fruit production
