Passenger-distance of JR transport in Japan FY 2014-2023
In the fiscal year 2023, the passenger-distance of railways operated by Japan Railways (JR) in Japan amounted to around 248.35 billion passenger-kilometers. Railroad transport is the major mass transit system in Japan, encompassing local systems from trams to high-speed railway lines for long-distance travels, such as the Japanese bullet train, also known as Shinkansen, which is operated by the JR Group. The Japan Railways Group operates several railway transportation companies in Japan, which also offer services in the real estate, travel, and hospitality businesses.
