Institutional actors have been responsable for the largest number of the racial violences and discrimination acts reported in Italy between 2008 and 2020, while single individuals have been the perpetrators of the second highest number of crimes. Overall, the number of reported racial violences and discrimination acts occurred in Italy increased between 2008 and 2020.
At the end of October 2019, the Italian Senate voted in favor of the establishment of a special committee to combat racial hate. A survey about the opinion on this Extraordinary Commission reveals that a large part of Italian respondents were in favor of its establishment. The Commission was proposed by the Senator Liliana Segre, Holocaust survivor.
