Between the years of 2014 and 2018, a total of 23 journalists were killed in Brazil, 12 in Colombia and 13 in Guatemala. There has been an increase in journalist deaths in South America in recent years, however the Syrian Arab Republic, Mexico, Afghanistan, and Iraq remain the most dangerous countries in terms of total death toll, with between 35 and 55 deaths occurring in each country respectively.
