Between January and July 2020, Italy's BCI experienced a decrease. Afterwards, the Business Confidence Index grew up to October 2021, when it reached 102.5.
Italy's economy has been seriously impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. As a consequence of the rising number of cases, on March 9, the Italian government announced that the country is in lockdown to prevent the spread of the virus. On May 4, Italy started easing its coronavirus lockdown. Eventually, new significant restrictions have been announced during the second wave of infections in autumn 2020. Currently, Italy is slowly on its way back to normality.

The business confidence index (BCI) is based on enterprises' assessment of production, orders and stocks, as well as its current position and expectations for the immediate future. Opinions compared to a “normal” state are collected and the difference between positive and negative answers provides a qualitative index on economic conditions.
