In 2023, there were 64 earthquakes recorded in South Korea, up from 57 in the previous year. In the same year, 42 earthquakes occurred in North Korea. Unlike neighboring Japan, the Korean peninsula experiences almost no truly serious earthquakes, and most of the earthquakes recorded that year were of a magnitude in the range of two to three ML (local magnitude scale).
