Share of bicycle sales in Belgium 2019, by type

As of 2019, the total share of electric bicycles amounted to nearly 50 percent of the total number of bikes sold in Belgium. City bikes had a share of 17 percent, whereas just under ten percent of the total bicycle sales were mountain bikes. The number of bikes that were sold in Belgium totaled to approximately 503,000 in 2018, which is an increase compared to the previous year when the sales volume of bikes amounted to 485,168. However, in 2019 it decreased slightly to roughly 470,000.

Sales volume and value of bicycles in the Netherlands

In the Netherlands, just over one million new bicycles were sold in 2018, which is an increase of 54,000 bikes compared to the previous year. The highest sales volume was recorded in 2008, when nearly 1.34 million bicycles were sold. The total sales value of new bicycles that were sold amounted to approximately 1.22 billion euros in 2018. It is the highest value in the period between 2008 to 2018.

Decrease in bike thefts

A good sign for Belgians owning a bicycle is that the number of registered bike thefts decreased annually from 2014 onwards. As of 2018, there were 31,078 bicycle thefts, which is the lowest recorded thefts in the period between 2008 to 2018.
