Italy's expenditure on social protection reached 30 percent of the country's GDP in 2022. It peaked in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, that caused a deep sanitary, economic, labor, and social crisis in the country. Social expenditure includes cash benefits, direct in-kind provision of goods and services, and tax breaks with social purposes, usually targeted at low-income households, the elderly, disabled, sick, unemployed, or young people.
