Italians eat less and less bread. The daily consumption per person was assumed to be about one kilogram as of 1861, the year of the country’s unification. More than a century later, an Italian consumer tended to eat 230 grams of bread per day. In 2014, the average daily consumption was by 90 grams. This reflects a huge change on people’s diet due to different economic conditions.
What kind of bread?
In the past, Italians could choose among a limited offer of bread types. Now, on supermarkets shelves, consumers find endless types of bakery products. Among those, long life bread was the most sold in Italy, with over 37 thousand tons sold as of 2019. Toasted bread reported the highest sales value with over 121 million euros in 2019.
Eating less carbohydrates
Lesser bread consumption is associated to diet trends, too. When on a diet, Italians would most likely reduce carbohydrates, as the low carb is the second most popular diet plan, according to this survey.
