Number of U.S. shale wells newly used by month 2019-2020

The coronavirus pandemic has had a devastating impact for the U.S. shale oil and gas industry. In May 2020, the estimated number of started hydraulic fracturing (fracking) operations amounted to only 335. This was a more than fourfold decline compared to the same month the previous year.
