Number of cases of online banking fraud in Belgium 2006-2019

In 2019, more than 12,000 cases of internet banking fraud were reported in Belgium. This was the highest number reached since 2006. Ever since the launch of digital payments, the payments industry tried to create a secure environment for financial transactions. The most common type of fraud in internet or online banking comes from phishing emails, a way of trying to trick people into giving secret financial information. Despite these circumstances, the use of online banking seems more common in the Benelux than the use of other online financial services. Between 2006 and 2016, the total number of internet banking subscriptions in Belgium increased from approximately 3.8 million subscriptions in 2005 to approximately 12 million subscriptions in 2015. In 2017, Belgium was ranked as 123rd in the world when it comes to the risk index score of money laundering and terrorist financing.
