In Italy, the market of portioned capsule coffee is getting bigger. The sales volume increased from 5.4 billion units sold in 2014 to seven billion units in 2018, thanks to an increasing demand. In fact, the average consumption of coffee capsules in Italian households went from 353 units a year in 2016 to an average of 430 capsules a year in 2017.

In Italy, the coffee capsules market is dwarfed by the market of roast coffee used for moka pot (a more traditional coffee maker). Nevertheless, the capsules segment had a volume of 69 million units and a value of 297 million euros in 2018.
Coffee pods and capsules
More in general, coffee in pods or capsules has gained shares in the market. In the household segment, the market share of coffee pods and capsules went from 68.2 percent in 2014 to 71.3 percent in 2018. However, the coffee pods and capsules consumed in workplaces seemed to have decreased slightly from 27.4 percent in 2014 to 24.3 percent in 2018.
