Number of passenger cars in use in Belgium 2008-2019

As of 2019, approximately 5.88 million passenger cars were found on the roads in Belgium. This is an increase of roughly 35,400 cars compared to the previous year and the highest volume in the period between 2008 and 2019. From the total number of passenger cars in 2019, most were diesel-fueled. Roughly three million cars that were in use in Belgium had a diesel engine, whereas just over 2.7 million passenger cars were petrol-fueled cars. Furthermore, diesel cars decreased from 2015 onwards, whereas the number of petrol cars on the roads increased between the period of 2012 and 2019.

Significant increases in hybrid and electric vehicles

Electric vehicles is a technology that contribute to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. From 2009 onwards, the number of electric passenger cars on the road in Belgium increased significantly. In 2009, there were ten electric passenger cars, whereas as of August 2019, the volume of electric cars totaled at 15,338. A similar development was observed with the number of hybrid vehicles. In 2018, 92,514 hybrid vehicles were in use, which is an increase of roughly 22 thousand vehicles compared to 2017.

Number of registered used cars

In 2018, the number of registered used cars amounted to nearly 720,000. The highest registration volume was in 2015, when there were 748,447 used cars registered in Belgium, whereas the lowest number of registered used cars was seen in 2008 with 653,109 second-hand cars.
