This survey shows the share of respondents in the Benelux who see digital currencies as future of online spending in 2016. Of the Benelux-countries, Belgian respondents agree the most with the statement posed. Bitcoin is a so-called cryptocurrency, a digital currency that uses blockchain technology as a means of security. In a survey conducted in the Netherlands on the familiarity with alternative digital currencies at the beginning of 2017, approximately 46 percent of the respondents indicated they heard about it but do not know much about it. Because of its design, however, it is difficult to get an insight in the complete size of the Bitcoin market in individual countries. In the first three quarters of 2017, there were approximately 44,000 trading transactions in Bitcoin in the Netherlands.
