Is Sweden going cashless?
Sweden is not yet cashless, but the use of cash has fallen overall since 2000. In several places and situations in Sweden cash payments are no longer possible and other payment methods are being used instead. As of 2019, less than 13 percent of all payment transactions in the country were made using cash.
What other payment methods are being used?
Card payment is still the most popular payment method in Sweden, but another method that is becoming more and more popular is mobile payment apps. The most common one is Swish, which was launched in 2012 by a few of the largest banks in Sweden. As of July 2020, the app had more than 7.8 million customers, most of them were private customers.
