Italy: Golden Lion winners at Venice Film Festival from 1949 to 2016, by country
Over the period from 1949 to 2016, Italy and France have been the most rewarded countries at the Venice Film festival, with 11 Golden Lion prizes each. The award is given to the best film competing in different categories, according to the jury of that year. During the festival, several films are played even if they do not participate to the competition. In 2019, 21 movies were officially presented, although they were out of the competition.
Last edition’s winner
At the last edition of the Venice Film festival in 2018, the Mexican “Roma” by Alfonso Cuarón was awarded with the Golden Lion. The film also won three Academy Awards in 2019 for the best foreign language film, the best achievement in directing and cinematography.
