As of 2023, Australia's net overseas migration was 152.2 thousand people. In 2020 and 2021, net migration in Australia reduced drastically due to travel restrictions imposed during the COVID-19 pandemic. Net migration increased to over 400 thousand people once restrictions were eased in 2022.

For the purposes of Net Overseas Migration (NOM), a person is regarded as a usual resident if they have been (or expect to be) residing in Australia for a period of 12 months or more. These 12 months do not need to be continuous and are measured over a period of 16 months.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) introduced the 12/16 month rule for calculating NOM in September quarter 2006. Consequently, this point marks a break in series and NOM estimates from earlier periods are not directly comparable.
