The survey was carried out to gauge the British public opinion on a number of issues facing the British steel industry. The results of this question indicate that the vast majority of people in the United Kingdom are in favor of the government supporting the domestic steel industry, even if British steel is more expensive.
Should the government of the United Kingdom (UK) support the British steel industry by using British steel in public-sector construction, or instead use cheaper steel that has been imported?
The exact phrasing of the question posed was: "Some have argued that the government should ensure greater use of steel manufactured in the UK within publically-funded construction contracts (eg. railways and roads) to support the steel industry. However, others have argued that the government should instead import steel from other countries, such as China, because it is cheaper. Which of the following statements is closest to your opinion?" There were three answers available to chose from: 1) "The government should do all that it can to ensure publicly-funded construction contracts support the UK steel industry", 2) "The government should import steel from other countries to seek the lowest price, regardless of country of origin", and 3) "Don't know". Northern Ireland was not included in this survey.
