Share of selected payment transaction services in the Netherlands 2000-2021
In 2020, direct debit payments consisted of approximately 16.5 percent of all payments in the Netherlands. The most payments, however, were made with cards issued by resident PSPs. Card payments with cards issued by resident PSPs reached approximately 51.7 percent of Dutch payments in 2020. Like in other European countries, credit and debit cards are a popular form of digital payment methods for either physical purchases in brick-and-mortar-stores or for online purchases in the Benelux region.
In 2019, Luxembourg had approximately 338 card payments per capita compared to 204 in Belgium and 294 in the Netherlands. Consumers from the Benelux are familiar with the use of credit cards. Domestic uses, however, appear to be few due to the presence of other popular payment services, with credit cards generally being used for specific situations such as online shopping or foreign travels.
