Number of card payments per capita in the Benelux region 2010-2019
This statistic shows the number of payments per capita with cards issued by resident PSPs in the Benelux countries (Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands) from 2010 to 2019. In 2019, Luxembourg had approximately 338 card payments per capita compared to 204 in Belgium and 294 in the Netherlands.
Like in other European countries, credit and debit cards are a popular form of digital payment methods for either physical purchases in brick-and-mortar-stores or for online purchases. In 2016, there were approximately 98 POS transactions per card in the Netherlands, compared to 67 in Belgium and 21 in Luxembourg.
Consumers from the Benelux are familiar with the use of credit cards. Domestic uses, however, appear to be few due to the presence of other popular payment services, with credit cards generally being used for specific situations such as online shopping or foreign travels.
