The revenue of the fitness, health, and gym club industry in the United States was approximately 30.6 billion U.S. dollars in 2022. The industry revenue was projected to increase slightly to 30.8 billion U.S. dollars in 2023.
Types of health and fitness clubs
There are many different types of health and fitness club in the United States. Traditional gyms typically offer a wide variety of cardio and weight-training equipment, as well as group fitness classes. Boutique fitness studios are usually smaller, specialized fitness clubs that focus on one type of exercise, such as yoga, Pilates, or spinning. CrossFit gyms focus on functional fitness and often use a combination of weightlifting, gymnastics, and cardio exercises. Fitness fans also have access to yoga and Pilates studios and outdoor fitness clubs, among many others.
Revenue sources
There are several factors that contribute to the fitness industry's revenue. One of the biggest drivers is the number of memberships, which has been steadily increasing over the years. In 2019, there were approximately 64.2 million health club members in the United States, almost double the 32.8 million health club members recorded in 2000. As the number of memberships increases, so does the revenue generated from membership fees. Another important factor to consider is the number of gym locations. There were about 31 thousand health clubs in the United States in 2022
