Prices of diesel fuel in Spain 2000 to 2021

The price of diesel in Spain fluctuated mostly on the rise in the past two decades. The average price for one liter of diesel fuel in the country stood at 1.23 euros in 2021, a long way up from only 0.7 euros in 2000. In 2020, the market was affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. According to information on the retail prices at service stations in Spain in April 2020, diesel fuel reached prices far from other years at 10.5 euros per 10 liters at BP Oil stations across Spain.

The rise and fall of diesel

The popularity of diesel engines in Spain skyrocketed the sales of cars that run on this type of fuel, which, in 2015, made up about 63 percent of new passenger car registrations in the country. By 2019 however, new diesel registrations represented only 33 percent of the sales. The overall reduction in diesel car sales is unsurprising given the 2015 diesel scandal and subsequent discussions surrounding the health and environmental impacts of this fuel type.

Price of 95 RON gas in Spain

Diesel is not the only type of fuel affected by the coronavirus pandemic: the price of 10 liters of gasoline 95 RON stood at 11.54 euros per 10 liters at BP Oil stations in Spain in April 2020 despite previous predictions. Gasoline, which also featured an upward trend over the last two decades, stood at an average of 1.29 euros throughout 2019 and reached a price of 1.17 euros per liter in 2020.
