Netherlands: share of mortgage applicants, by position in the housing market 2012-2017

This survey shows the share of mortgage applicants in the Netherlands from the first quarter of 2012 to the first quarter of 2017, by position in the housing market. In the first quarter of 2017, 39 percent of the respondents were either first-time buyer of reentered the housing market. This is a decrease when compared to the same period one year before, when this group reached a share of 44 percent.

The survey, issued by the AFM (Dutch Authority Financial Markets) and conducted by GfK, measures consumer behavior regarding mortgages and is published twice per year. Between the first quarter of 2012 and the first quarter of 2016, the survey had 323 to 486 respondents. The survey was conducted with both a computer-assisted web interview (CAWI), which contained 35 questions, and a postal questionnaire. Out of 600 postal questionnaires sent, 401 responded.

First-time buyer/Reentry = bought property for the first time/moved from rental apartment to becoming home-owner, and was this before.

Existing buyer = moved from one bought property to another.

Remortgage = changed mortgage and lives in the same bought apartment.

Construction mortgage = applied for mortgage as a means to finance construction.
