Domestic full service airports were the most expensive type to be built in the United Kingdom. As was true for other public building construction projects, out of UK regions, London was the costliest turf. In 2018, the internal area for a full service airport built in the country’s capital stood at 3,950 British pounds per square meter. By comparison, Northern Ireland was the cheapest region to build in.
Air freight handled
In 2017, UK airports handled around 79,200 tons of freight on domestic flights and over 2.5 million tons through international bound flights. While figures for domestic cargo have been decreasing in recent years, the amount of goods handled from international planes peaked in 2017.
London home to busiest aiports
In terms of passenger air transport, London Heathrow was the busiest airport in the UK. As of October 2018, over 67 million passengers had traveled via Heathrow that year. Of the five leading airports, four were located in and around London.
