Non-household prices for electricity in Italy 2008-2023

Non-household electricity customers with a consumption between 500 and 2,000 megawatt-hours tend to pay higher prices than users with consumption greater than 20,000 megawatt-hours in Italy. In 2023, electricity prices amounted to roughly 23.6 euro cents per kilowatt-hour for the former and 19.5 for the latter. Due to the 2022 energy crisis, these figures were the highest in over a decade. 

Electricity is overpriced in Italy

Compared to most European countries, Italian consumers paid significantly more for electricity. In 2023, Italy ranked among the 10 countries with the most expensive non-residential electricity price in the European Union. The average electricity price for non-residential consumers in France, for example, was much lower throughout the observed period.

Italy's dependency on gas

In 2022, natural gas accounted for over 40 percent of the country’s electricity mix. Overall, Italy relied on gas imports for over 95 percent of its demand. This means that the price of gas largely depends on the wholesale price rather than that on the domestic market.
