The average student spending on course material in the United States came to 333 U.S. dollars in the 2022/23 academic year, down from 339 dollars a year earlier. Course material spending has been declining for years, and has dropped by over 200 U.S. dollars since the 2014/15 academic year.

Campus stores distributed the survey to their students by email. The first survey fielded for a two- or three-week period in October/November 2017. A total of 20,277 valid responses were collected. The second survey wave fielded in February/March 2018 and yielded a total of 14,253 responses. The data from each survey were weighted by campus type to more accurately reflect the proportion of students enrolled at two- and four-year U.S. institutions. The margin of error for this study is <1.0 at the 95% confidence level.
