Mexico: avocado wholesale prices 2019, by month

The wholesale price of avocados in Mexico City fluctuated between 31 and 71 Mexican pesos per kilogram between January and November 2019. The price reached its peak in July 2019, when it attained a value of 70.65 pesos. This fluctuation in price is a result of increasing global demand as well as different supply cycles in the industry.

The Mexican avocado industry

Avocado, known in Spanish as “aguacate” or “palta”, is widely produced in Mexico. This fruit is cultivated mainly in the state of Michoacán. As the fruit has become increasingly popular around the world, production in the country has increased in recent years. With this increase in production, Mexico has become the number one exporter of avocado in the world, making the commodity its second most exported agri-food product.

As consumption of avocado rises worldwide, the market size of this fruit is expected to attain a value of 23 billion U.S. dollars by 2027 — almost twice the value reported in 2016. In addition, with the arrival of new avocado-based products, the market size of the avocado processing industry is also expanding, with commodities such as avocado oil now present, for example, in the cosmetics market.
