An increasing number of passengers have been choosing air travel in Germany. Figures decreased noticeably in 2020 and 2021, the years of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, with subsequent travel bans and border closures. Optimistically so, numbers picked up noticeably in 2023, with around, 185.6 million passengers transported.
Lufthansa
One of the best-known German airlines, Lufthansa, suffered massively during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, and strikes also followed in recent years. As of 2021, the group owned a total of 721 aircrafts, with the largest share going to Lufthansa German Airlines, which also includes regional airlines. Other well-known companies in the sector operating in Germany are Eurowings, TUIfly and Condor. All of these operate scheduled flights to various locations.
Frankfurt/ Main leading passenger airport
Germany is home to one of the busiest airports in the world in Frankfurt/ Main, or just Frankfurt. Despite the pandemic, Frankfurt saw the most passengers in 2023, followed by Munich and Berlin. Numbers have picked up in all three airports since travel bans have been lifted.
