Marijuana legalization is a hotly debated topic in the U.S. and around the world. Prices of marijuana can be highly variable across the United States. As of 2018, Washington D.C. had the highest cost for an ounce of legal marijuana with an average cost of about 506 U.S. dollars. Oregon, on the other hand, had the lowest legal marijuana costs at that time with an average price of about 186 U.S. dollars. Marijuana popularity has increased in the U.S. as have the number of states allowing legal marijuana usage.

U.S. marijuana legalization

As of June 2019, there were 33 states that had legalized marijuana in some form. Of those states, 11 had legalized recreational marijuana use. Surveys indicate that U.S. adults’ support for legalization of marijuana is on the rise. Likewise, the sales of legal marijuana are expected to exceed 23 billion U.S. dollars by the year 2025.

Recreational marijuana

Recreational marijuana usage among U.S. residents has been increasing in recent years. 2017 saw the largest number of people that had ever used marijuana in their lifetime. Given the increase in usage, one might wonder what reasons U.S. residents have for using or trying marijuana. As of 2017 the main reason U.S. adults use marijuana was for relaxation, followed by stress relief. When U.S. consumers were asked about their preferred form of marijuana consumption flowers or edibles were selected more frequently than other forms (concentrates, pills, liquids, etc.).
