Net worth of The Hamleys Group worldwide 2010-2017
The Hamleys Group owns the UK’s and the world’s oldest toy shop Hamleys. Now owned by the Indian company Reliance Industries, the well-established British toy retailer had previously changed hands between Icelandic, French and Chinese companies. Since 2012, the net worth of the company has plummeted dramatically, going from 20 million to 5.5 million British pounds by 2017.
Toy retail crippled by online
Online had transformed retail, but toy retail market has had it particularly bad. By 2017, online sales of toys had a solid share of more than one third of all toy sales in Great Britain. This was certainly not helped by the general downward trend in toy sales.
Competition comes from outside toy market
Hamleys is not the only toy retailer struggling in the ailing market. The global toy phenomenon Toys “R” Us went in the direction of reinventing itself after closing down its US stores in late 2018. Now trading under the name of Tru Kids, Toys “R” Us left a void behind it, leading its many customers to other retailers that do not exclusively sell toys and games, such as Argos, Wilko and IKEA in the UK.
