Albert Heijn’s market share peaked in 2022.

Albert Heijn’s market share in online grocery sales was even larger, at over 40 percent in 2019. This was however a decrease in comparison to the previous four years. At its peak in 2016, Albert Heijn had held a market share of nearly 60 percent online. Since then however, Jumbo and especially Picnic (a supermarket operating online exclusively) had been able to expand their market shares considerably.

Albert Heijn was not just the supermarket with the largest market share, it was also the supermarket chain with the largest number of stores nationwide. In 2022, there were 1,154 Albert Heijn supermarkets in the Netherlands. By comparison, Jumbo had 685 stores, and Aldi and Lidl had less than 500 each.
With a market share of 37 percent, Albert Heijn was the leading supermarket in the Netherlands in 2022. Jumbo, another supermarket chain, had a market share of 21.5 percent, whereas German discounters Lidl and Aldi held shares of 10.1 and 5.4 percent respectively. Online grocery retail market
