The source notes: "Innovators are defined as companies which introduced at least one product or process innovation during a preceding period of three years. This is independent of whether another company had already previously introduced this innovation."

The source notes: "The definition of innovation was adjusted in 2018 in accordance with the revised Oslo Manual by OECD and Eurostat. In 2019, the reporting scope of the innovation survey was expanded to include companies with at least five employees subject to social security contributions or those marginally employed. Only employees subject to social security contributions were considered until 2018. Therefore the number of surveyed companies grew."

According to the source, around 18,600 companies took part in the innovation survey, among them 317 from car manufacturing. The number of participating companies in previous years may vary.
