Car production in Germany 1990-2023

Around 4.12 million German vehicles were produced in 2023. This was an increase compared to the previous year at 3.4 million cars. Figures fluctuated during the specified time period, having peaked in 2011. The German automobile industry is one of the pillars of the German economy and also an established heavyweight on the global economic stage.

German automobile production is dominated by brands which, while having national roots, have long since enjoyed international fame and recognition, as well as demand. They quickly come to mind: Volkswagen, Audi, Mercedes-Benz, to name just a few. Based on ownership figures, the most popular car brand in Germany was, indeed, Volkswagen. The brand was also in the lead in terms of leading car models by new car registrations among German drivers, with the VW Golf being the most popular choice. The number of passenger cars sold in Germany fluctuated slightly in recent years, with around 2.62 million sold in 2021.

Road trip

Europe was the leading export destination for German cars in 2021. The number of cars exported varied in the last decade, with decreasing figures recorded in recent years. In 2021, around 2.37 million vehicles were exported from Germany.
