Number of onshore natural gas producing wells in Italy 2012-2023
In 2023, there were 336 onshore natural gas producing wells in Italy. The number of onshore wells for natural gas production has gradually decreased over time. As a matter of fact, in 2012 there were 435 wells in the country. The number of offshore natural gas producing wells has also declined.
Italy's natural gas domestic production
The domestic production of natural gas decreased hand in hand with the number of wells. The volume of natural gas produced in Italy decreased from 9.3 billion cubic meters in 2007 to 3.2 million cubic meters in 2022. Most of the production took place offshore. Almost 1.5 billion cubic meters of natural gas were obtained from offshore wells. Regarding onshore production, Basilicata was the region with the highest volume of natural gas produced nationwide.
Electricity production from natural gas in Italy
The share of electricity generation from natural gas steadily grew over the past few years and amounted to roughly 47 percent in 2022. In 2022, electricity generation accounted for 40 percent of the total consumption of natural gas in Italy.
