This statistic shows the total foreign direct investments (stocks) in banking and insurance in the Netherlands from 2003 to 2018 (in million euros). In 2003, foreign countries invested approximately 178.6 billion euros in banks and insurance companies. By 2018, total foreign direct investments amounted approximately 3,587 billion euros.

Foreign direct investment (FDI) is an investment in a business by an investor from another country for which the foreign investor has control over the company purchased. Control, according to the Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development, is defined as owning ten percent or more of a business. This includes so-called Special Financial Institutions (or SFIs), holding companies in the Netherlands of foreign companies or finance companies that extend loans to foreign group companies. Due to the fiscal climate, the Netherlands has relatively many of these SFIs.
