Living and deceased liver transplants in Italy 2007-2023

Overall, the number of living and deceased liver transplants increased in Italy. More specifically, the number of whole liver transplants from deceased donors grew from 924 procedures in 2007 to 1,568 transplants in 2023.

Conversely, the liver transplant waiting list shortened, since the number went from 1,395 patients in 2008 to 920 patients in 2023. Livers, however, were not the most needed organ for those on a waiting list. As a matter of fact, 6,022 patients necessitated a kidney transplant, as of 2023. Furthermore, the kidney was the organ with the highest transplantation activity rate in 2023.

Organ transplants in Italy

In Italy the number of organ transplants increased remarkably over time. It peaked in 2023 at 4,462 procedures performed. Also, the number of organ donors grew between 2002 and 2023, when it peaked at 2,042 organ donors. In Italy, organ donation is regulated by the principle of explicit consent or dissent. Currently, there is the possibility in Italy to make a declaration about the intent to donate organs concurrently with the renewal of an identity card.
