This statistic shows the gross government expenses on the Long-term Care Act (Wlz) in the Netherlands from 2008 to 2018 with a forecast from 2019 to 2023 (in million euros). The Exceptional Medical Expenses Act (AWBZ) covered the Dutch population against certain special healthcare needs, and aimed to finance 'care' rather than 'cure'. For example, the AWBZ covered rehabilitation treatment. In 2015, this was replaced by the Long-term Care Act (Wlz). In 2020, the Dutch government expects to spend a gross sum of approximately 25 billion euros. This is an increase compared to the 23.6 billion euros reached in the previous year. In the Netherlands, every resident or employee is obliged to take a basic health insurance to cover medical costs from, for example, visits to a general practitioner or the hospital. The Dutch government decides on the cover provided by this package and health insurance companies are obliged to accept everyone who meets the requirements, regardless of age or state of health.
