in 2015, the usage of safety helmets was widespread in Northern Italy and in the Center. In fact, nearly the totality of motorbike users adopted this safety measure. By contrast, the share of motorbike users wearing helmets dropped to less than 94 percent in the South and Islands.

Data obtained through a monitoring system designed for the usage of vehicle safety equipment. The project "Ulisse" is conducted by the Istituto Superiore di Sanità in collaboration with the Ministero delle Infrastrutture e dei Trasporti.
The detection network allows to obtain feedbacks on the usage of front seat belts, rear seat belts, helmets, child seats and phones within 19 cities located throughout the national territory, covering a population of over 9 million people. The monitoring activities were carried out in urban areas, sub-urban areas and in some cases extra urban areas.
