Policy funding ratio of the five largest pension funds in the Netherlands 2015-2023
The quarterly policy funding ratio of the five largest pension funds in the Netherlands fluctuated between the first quarter of 2016 and the fourth quarter of 2023. From January 1st, 2015, the policy funding ratio determines the financial health of Dutch pension funds. The policy funding ratio is the average of the funding ratio of the last 12 months and compares the assets from a pension fund against its liabilities. Should the index reach 100 percent, the fund can pay all the pensions. Should the ratio become too low, funds are forced to cut in their pensions. The policy funding ratio is reported to the Dutch Central Bank (DNB). In the fourth quarter of 2023, the assets of all the Dutch pension funds considered outweighed their liabilities, as they all had policy funding ratios larger than 100 percent.
