Just Eat’s expansion through global acquisitions
Although established in Denmark, Just Eat’s international expansion began from its headquarters in the UK in 2007. Much of this involved partnering with local operators and the acquisition of local competitors across various global markets. The expansion accelerated in 2009, when Just Eat entered the North American market by acquiring several Canadian brands. The company also went on to acquire Australian food ordering company Menulog in 2015.
As of 2019, the company operates in 13 countries under four regional brands: Just Eat in Europe (operating as Eat.cu in Switzerland), SkipTheDishes in Canada, ifood in Latin America (operating under Sin Delantal in Mexico) and Menulog in Australia and New Zealand. The UK and Canada are Just Eat’s biggest markets. Worldwide, Just Eat’s orders reached over 220 million across all its platforms in 2018.
Do you deliver?
The online food delivery market can be split between platform-to-consumer-delivery (when the online order and delivery are both carried out by the platform) and restaurant-to-consumer delivery (when the order is delivered directly by the restaurant). Just Eat Takeaway.com’s business primarily falls into the latter, however following their growth success the brand plans to further invest in delivery services to compete with rivals such as Deliveroo and UberEats.
