Italy: activities carried out in the kitchen 2015

A 2015 survey revealed that 42 percent of Italians used to socialize in the kitchen space. Apart from cooking or eating, the kitchen is seen as a space to chat and have human interactions for 40 percent of respondents. This happens quite frequently, as in 2016, 64.2 percent of Italians stated to have their meal at home.

At-home cooking

   The 2015 survey indicated that 98 percent of respondents had the habit of cooking at home. A further survey in 2017 showed that, on an average day, Italians spent 1.3 hours in the kitchen preparing their meal. In other countries, trends seemed to vary a lot: in 2014, French spent between 3.3 and 6.7 hours a week, depending on the age group. In 2015, the weekly time spent by Spanish people was between 5.1 and 6.7 hours. Lastly, in Sweden, the results of a survey indicated that on average, 47 percent of individuals spent one hour a day to buy and prepare food for dinner.

Barriers for cooking at home

   What prevents people from cooking at home? In most cases, it is the lack of time. In addition, 19 percent of individuals admitted that they lacked in inspiration.
