Ranking of publishing companies in Sweden 2023, by turnover

According to the most recently available data based on available financial reporting, the leading company in the publishing industry in Sweden was Foxt Sweden AB, with a turnover of 24.52 billion SEK. Magazine publisher Aller Media dropped out of the top 20 as of 2023. Aller Media's profit took a nosedive between 2019 and 2020, dropping from 85 million SEK to just 52 million SEK over the course of one fiscal year.

Sweden’s book publishing industry

Book publisher sales revenue in Sweden fluctuates each year, but in 2021 recorded its highest revenue in recent years, pulling over two billion Swedish kronor. This marked an increase of almost 150 million SEK compared to the previous year. Some book sale distribution channels are more lucrative than others, with most derived from digital resellers and online bookstores whilst sales through physical bookstores are on the decline.

Publishing activities beyond print media

Included in the ranking of leading publishing companies are not only those focusing primarily on book, newspaper, and magazine publishing, but also those working in video games or software. Mojang AB for example is one of the leading digital games developers in Sweden and is best known for critically acclaimed video game Minecraft. Monthly Minecraft app downloads in Sweden generally surpass four thousand in the Apple App Store alone and now regularly enjoys over one hundred thousand average views worldwide via Twitch each month. Minecraft is not the only well-known game to originate from Sweden, with Mirror’s Edge, Unravel, and Candy Crush also having been developed there.
