The World Cup
After finishing third at the World Cup in 2014, it came as a surprise to many when the Netherlands did not qualify for the 2018 World Cup in Russia. As a result, 33 percent of Dutch people responded they would not watch any of the games when asked in a survey. Only seven percent said they would be watching all the games.
The Netherlands national team reached the quarter-finals of the 2022 World Cup after defeating the USA 3-1 in the round of 16. However, their journey came to an end in the quarter-finals, as they lost to Argentina in a match that went to a penalty shootout. After the game finished 2-2, the Netherlands lost 4-3 on penalties, marking the first defeat for the team since June 2021.
