As of August 2024, Gylfi Sigurdsson was Iceland's all-time top scorer, with a total of 27 goals. In second place was the former Chelsea and Barcelona forward Eidur Gudjohnsen, who retired in 2017.

Iceland had failed to qualify for the World Cup on 12 occasions before finally managing it in late 2017. As a result, it became the smallest nation to reach the World Cup, having a population of around 340,000. In their opening game, Iceland drew with Argentina, yet exited the competition after losing to Nigeria and Croatia.
