In 2022, unmarried prisoners made up the largest group of prison population broken down by marital status. According to data, they amounted to 17,400 individuals. Moreover, married prisoners added up to approximately 14,900, the second largest value displayed in the chart. On the contrary, widowed people in custody were 563, the lowest amount among the different groups.
Furthermore, data related to the age of prisoners show that individuals aged between 50 and 59 years made up the largest group of incarcerated population in Italy.
