Most purchased and consumed beverages in Germany 2019-2023
Mineral water is by far the most purchased and consumed beverage in Germany. Around 86 percent of the population bought it in 2023. Germans are known for their preference for fizzy drinking water. Other top three beverages in this ranking included fruit juice, drinks and nectar, as well as caffeinated coffee.
A multi-billion-euro industry
The beverage industry as such includes the manufacture of various alcoholic drinks, as well as non-alcoholic ones and mineral water. Generating almost 25 billion euros worth of total revenue in 2023, of which soft drinks and mineral water contributed the second largest revenue share. Beer followed in close third place, generating almost nine million euros in revenue in 2023. Earnings are expected to grow in the next years. Forecasts predict that German beverage manufacturing will bring in as much as 35.15 billion U.S. dollars worth of revenue in 2024.
What about beer?
While Germany is widely known both for its long-standing beer production industry, as well as seemingly active consumption habits, beer is not in the top three of the most bought beverages. Pils and export beer are overtaken by Cola drinks, caffeinated coffee and fruit juice. Beer consumption per capita has been dropping significantly compared to the 1970s and 1980s and, as of 2023, was still on a downward trend.
