Top film distributors in Italy 2023, by box office revenue

In 2023, Warner Bros Italia was the leading movie distributor in Italy, with a box office revenue of approximately 101.35 million euros. Closely followed by, Walt Disney S.M.P. Italia and Universal S.R.L. with reported box office revenues of about 85.6 million and 84.81 million euros, respectively.

The Italian movie industry after COVID-19

Between 2019 and 2020, the revenue of the film sector in Italy declined by over 73 percent, standing at approximately 212 million euros. The restrictions imposed in response to the pandemic emptied movie theaters across the Italian Peninsula and posed an unparalleled challenge to the industry. However, there is a perspective of growth in the mid-term. It was projected that the filmed entertainment revenue in Italy would increase by more than 24 percent between 2019 and 2024.

Cinema: top regions and months

The box office revenue in Italy is highly concentrated in its wealthiest regions. Two of them, Lombardy and Lazio – where the capital Rome is located – accounted for almost one-third of Italy's box office revenue in 2020. Timing also is a factor: theaters in Italy tend to welcome fewer moviegoers during the summer. But the coronavirus outbreak subverted this trend. In 2020, January alone recorded a higher box office revenue than all the other months of that year combined.
