Poured amount of beer at the Munich Oktoberfest 1980-2024

In 2023, around 6.5 million liters of beer were poured at the Oktoberfest in Munich, an increase compared to the year before. Numbers fluctuated during the time span indicated, though they have definitely increased since the 1980s.

The Oktoberfest

Contrary to popular opinion, especially abroad, the Oktoberfest is not central to all of Germany, though it is the largest Volksfest (fair or folk festival) in the world and certainly one of the most famous. Its native to the city of Munich, which is the state capital of Bavaria. The Oktoberfest is largely reflective of the Bavarian culture, which is distinctive on its own. Both local and international celebrities come to the event, as well as the local population. The festival might be less popular in Northern Germany. Where there is an Oktoberfest, there is, of course, beer, served in the so-called Maß drinking mug. The Maß measures one liter. Overall per capita beer consumption in Germany has been dropping in recent years.

While beer is a crucial part of the Oktoberfest, it’s also flowing towards becoming a luxury if price trends continue to develop the way they have in recent years. The prices for a Maß have only been going up, amounting to almost 12 euros per mug in 2019.
